Iron & Faith: Discipline

Three training days, three devotionals, about five minutes before you lift. Read the full passage (NIV) first every time. Each one has four parts: The rep (the idea), Under the bar (one action today), Reflect (one honest question) and Prayer.

Monday: Train with intent

Read: 1 Corinthians 9:24–27

The rep: Paul writes like a man who has been around athletes. Runners train hard for a prize that fades; we run for one that lasts. Disciplining his body isn't self-hatred. It's refusing to let cravings and moods make the decisions. Discipline is your body learning to follow your convictions.

Under the bar: Before your first working set, write today's goal at the top of your log ("3x5 squat at 225, clean depth"). Train to that line, not to how you feel.

Reflect: Where are my moods making decisions my convictions should be making?

Prayer: Lord, I want to run for the prize that lasts. Help me lead my body today instead of following it. Make my training obedience, not ego.

Wednesday: Yes means yes

Read: Matthew 5:33–37; Ecclesiastes 5:4–5

The rep: Jesus says a man of integrity doesn't need oaths; his yes is enough. Every skipped session you promised yourself is a small broken vow, and they add up. You aren't just building muscle. You're rebuilding trust in your own word.

Under the bar: Make one promise for today you can keep: full warm-up, every set logged, no phone between sets. Say it out loud. Keep it.

Reflect: What promise do I keep breaking, and what smaller one would I actually keep?

Prayer: Father, You've never broken a promise to me. Make me a man whose yes means yes, starting today, in the small things.

Friday: The harvest comes later

Read: Hebrews 12:7–13

The rep: No discipline feels good in the moment. Later it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace. Progressive overload works the same way: soreness now, strength weeks later. God disciplines you because you're His son, not because you're failing.

Under the bar: On your last exercise, add one extra quality set at the same weight. Not to failure. On purpose.

Reflect: What part of my life is in the painful-now phase, and do I trust the harvest?

Prayer: God, thank You for treating me like a son. When discipline hurts, remind me what it's growing. Strengthen my weak knees, starting with my spirit.
